OBK Movement is a Gimmick; Until a Presidential Candidate is Picked, Before You Pick a Vice-Da
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Solomon Dalung, has said ongoing discussions around a potential alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso remain speculative, describing them as political gimmicks at this stage of the party’s internal process.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Friday, April 23, 2026, Dalung stressed that any talk of a joint ticket involving Obi and Kwankwaso is premature, as the party has yet to produce its presidential candidate.
“The OBK movement is also part of the political gimmicks, until a presidential candidate is produced before you pick a vice,” he said.
His comments directly address growing speculation about a possible Obi–Kwankwaso (OBK) alliance within opposition circles ahead of the 2027 general election. The potential pairing has generated debate among supporters and political stakeholders seeking a formidable coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Dalung emphasised that in Nigeria’s political structure, decisions on running mates are typically made only after a party’s presidential flag bearer has emerged. He noted that current alignments and endorsements should be seen as part of broader political calculations rather than final arrangements.
His remarks highlight internal caution within the ADC, as it navigates competing interests and coalition pressures while preparing for its national convention and eventual candidate selection.
The clarification is likely to temper expectations among supporters of an Obi–Kwankwaso ticket, reinforcing the party’s position that its internal democratic processes will ultimately determine the final configuration for 2027.
