Governor names serving senator as preferred successor

Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state, has announced Aliyu Wadada, senator representing Nasarawa west, as his preferred successor.

Sule spoke on Thursday during a meeting with political appointees at the government house in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa.

He said the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders both within and outside the state over the past year.

“After exhaustive consultations, the field was eventually narrowed to three aspirants, each of whom was considered capable of winning. Further consultations were conducted before a final decision was reached in favour of senator Wadada,” he said.

“We had to look for people who have the capacity to win this election.”

Wadada, who chairs the senate committee on public accounts, defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in August 2025.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed April 23 to May 30 for political parties to conduct primaries and field candidates for the 2027 general election.
