Shock In Jos: Gunmen Disguised As NDLEA Operatives Behind Deadly Attack — Governor Reveals

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has disclosed that gunmen behind the recent deadly attack in Jos allegedly disguised themselves as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to gain access to the community before launching their assault.

According to Ireporter Online, the attack occurred in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area, on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of no fewer than 28 people, while several others sustained injuries. The governor noted that, as of the time of reporting, no suspects had been apprehended in connection with the incident.

In response to the tragedy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Plateau State on Thursday to sympathise with affected families. During the visit, he held meetings with grieving relatives, traditional rulers, and government officials, and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to track down and arrest those responsible for the killings.

The development has triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria, with citizens calling for urgent and decisive measures to address escalating security concerns in the state.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television, Mutfwang explained that the attackers carefully mimicked the operational pattern of NDLEA officials to deceive residents. He stated that locals were accustomed to seeing NDLEA personnel conduct raids in nearby areas targeting drug-related offences, which made the disguise effective.

He further explained that the assailants arrived hooded and opened fire in a manner similar to how NDLEA operatives typically carry out enforcement actions, leading residents to initially assume it was a legitimate operation and not resist.

By the time the true nature of the attack became evident, significant casualties had already been recorded, and the perpetrators had fled the scene. The governor described the incident as unfortunate and deeply troubling.

Mutfwang revealed that security agencies are currently working with credible intelligence to identify and apprehend those responsible, although he declined to disclose specific details about the ongoing investigation. He assured the public that useful leads are being pursued and expressed confidence that the perpetrators would eventually be brought to justice.

Describing the attack as premeditated and professionally executed, the governor noted that the gunmen appeared to possess advanced weapon-handling skills. He added that both residents and security operatives were taken by surprise, particularly as Plateau State had experienced relative calm for nearly ten months prior to the incident.

While acknowledging the anger and frustration among residents, the governor urged the public to remain calm and refrain from any form of reprisal, stressing that the attackers’ objective was to destabilise the state and undermine ongoing peace efforts. He called on citizens to stay law-abiding as security agencies continue their investigations.
