Many Feared Trapped in Abuja as Hotel Under Construction Collapses

Tension gripped residents of Jikwoyi on Friday after a hotel building under construction reportedly collapsed, leaving several people feared trapped beneath the debris.

The structure, identified as Ugo West Hotel, was still undergoing construction when it suddenly caved in, sending shockwaves across the area and drawing a large crowd of concerned onlookers.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the building gave way without warning, trapping construction workers and possibly other occupants at the site. The incident sparked immediate panic, as residents and passersby rushed toward the scene in an attempt to help.

In the absence of emergency responders at the early stage of the incident, local volunteers took matters into their own hands, working frantically to remove rubble in hopes of rescuing those believed to be buried under the collapsed structure.

As of the time this report was filed, the exact number of victims whether trapped, injured, or dead remains unclear. Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, including the possible cause of the collapse.

The situation has raised fresh concerns about building safety standards and regulatory enforcement in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly with regard to structures still under development.
