The Commissioner for Water Resources in Bauchi State, Nuhu Zaki, has resigned from the state executive council.
Zaki attributed his resignation to political ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He disclosed this in a resignation letter addressed to the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Tuesday.
According to the letter, the resignation, which takes effect from March 31, 2026, will enable him to contest the Senate seat for Bauchi Central Senatorial District in line with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“I wish to tender my resignation as Commissioner, Ministry of Water Resources, effective March 31, 2026.
“This decision is to enable me to contest for Senate in Bauchi Central Zone, as per INEC guidelines,” he stated.
He also expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet and for the support extended to him during his tenure.
Zaki is the first member of the Bauchi State Executive Council to step down as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former commissioner played key roles in the administration of Governor Mohammed, contributing to its successes during the 2019 Nigerian general elections and 2023 Nigerian general elections.
Prior to his appointment as Commissioner for Water Resources in the governor’s second term, he had served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during the administration’s first term.
His resignation comes amid ongoing political developments within the Peoples Democratic Party in Bauchi State.
Recently, Mohammed convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Bauchi to address lingering internal crises within the party ahead of the 2027 polls.
The meeting led to the formation of a reconciliation and strategy committee chaired by the governor, with a mandate to resolve disputes and reposition the party.
Speaking after the meeting, the state PDP chairman, Samaila Burga, said stakeholders unanimously endorsed the committee to restore unity and strengthen the party’s chances in future elections.
Burga expressed optimism that the intervention would stabilise the party and enhance its electoral prospects in the state.
The development also comes against the backdrop of renewed speculation over Governor Mohammed’s political future.
Although he has repeatedly denied rumours of a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress, fresh claims have continued to surface in recent days, fuelling uncertainty within the state’s political landscape.
