According to the military, preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals were allegedly on a mission to deliver supplies to Boko Haram fighters.
The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of 18 individuals allegedly involved in supplying logistics to Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria’s North-East, exposing what it described as a growing network of civilian collaborators sustaining terrorist operations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Army said the suspects were apprehended by troops of Operation HADIN KAI while moving through Gubio towards the Gudumbali axis, an area known for insurgent activity.
According to the military, preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals were allegedly on a mission to deliver supplies to Boko Haram fighters.
The Army disclosed that initial confessions from the suspects suggested many were drawn into the illegal network due to economic hardship.
“Initial findings indicate that the individuals were drawn into the illicit trade largely due to personal economic challenges,” the statement said, noting that insurgent groups continue to exploit vulnerable civilians to sustain their operations.
The military issued a strong warning to Nigerians against any form of support for terrorist groups, stressing that providing logistics, intelligence, or assistance constitutes a serious offence.
“The Nigerian Army strongly warns all citizens against any form of collaboration with terrorist groups,” it stated.
“Providing logistics, intelligence, or assistance to such elements remains a serious offence, with grave consequences for national security and the safety of innocent lives.”
The Army emphasised that success in the fight against insurgency depends heavily on the cooperation of local communities.
“The effectiveness of ongoing operations depends greatly on the vigilance, cooperation, and active support of host communities,” the statement added, urging residents to report suspicious movements and reject inducements from criminal groups.
Beyond security operations, the Army highlighted the need for broader socio-economic interventions to address the root causes of insurgency.
“It is equally important to recognise the need for sustained socio-economic support and community-focused initiatives that can strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerabilities,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Army said it remains resolute in protecting communities and restoring peace, while calling for a unified national effort.
“Lasting peace and stability can only be achieved through a unified approach, where security operations are complemented by development efforts and strong community partnerships,” it said.
