Hisbah Reportedly Storms Hotel, Flogs Guests With Canes Over Violation of Sharia Law

Katsina State’s Hisbah Board reportedly raided Jakada Hotel, entering rooms and flogging guests with canes over alleged violations of Sharia law.
A video shared on social media by @instablog9ja shows the officials punishing guests, reportedly for offences such as unmarried couples cohabiting.

The raid echoes previous actions in the state, where hotels have been closed for similar moral infractions.

Hisbah, Nigeria’s Sharia enforcement agency in northern states, carries out such operations to uphold Islamic codes.

However, the agency has faced criticism for alleged overreach and human rights abuses, including past cases in 2024 involving underage lodging and reports of assault.

Reactions to the video on X (formerly Twitter) have ranged from shock and condemnation of the “barbaric” tactics to humorous remarks about northern customs.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria over religious policing and its impact on citizens’ rights.

As of now, Katsina State authorities have not commented publicly on the raid.
