No Retreat, No Surrender’ – Malami Speaks After Release, Praises Atiku And Obi
Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has expressed appreciation to his family, political allies and supporters following his release from custody over allegations of corruption. According to Ireporter Online, Malami, alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and his son, Abdulaziz, is facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He has, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The former minister was initially remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre but was later rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services on January 19 shortly after regaining his freedom. He had earlier alleged that he was denied access to his family members and legal representatives during his detention.
Reports indicate that on February 27, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja granted Malami and his son bail in the sum of ₦200 million each over allegations linked to terrorism-related offences. Reacting to the development in a statement issued through his media aide, Mohammed Doka, the former AGF described his experience as a challenging phase of his life.
He expressed deep gratitude to those who stood by him during what he termed a period marked by media scrutiny and what he called prejudicial narratives, noting that their support strengthened his resolve throughout the ordeal.
Malami also acknowledged several prominent political figures for their backing, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi. Others he appreciated include Aminu Tambuwal, Kashim Imam, Lawal Batagarawa, Lauretta Onochie, and Bolaji Abdullahi, describing their interventions as courageous and principled.
Despite his release, Malami stated that his attention is now directed toward broader national concerns, urging Nigerians to unite in the pursuit of justice, accountability, and national progress. He warned that the country is at a critical juncture and called for bold leadership and active citizen engagement in safeguarding democratic values.
