Esmaeil Khatib, identified as the Iranian government Minister of Intelligence, has been killed in a targeted strike in Tehran, according to an official announcement by the Israeli Defence Forces.
The statement, which highlighted his role within Iran’s security structure, declared: “Eliminated: Esmaeil Khatib, the Iranian terrorist regime Minister of Intelligence, in a targeted strike in Tehran.”
Khatib was said to have played a significant role during recent protests across Iran. According to the statement, “Khatib played a significant role during the recent protests throughout Iran, including the arrest & killing of protestors and led terrorist activities against Israelis & Americans around the world.”
The report further linked him to actions during the Mahsa Amini protests between 2022 and 2023, noting that “he operated against Iranian citizens during the Mahsa Amini protests (2022–2023).”
As Minister of Intelligence, Khatib oversaw a powerful security apparatus. The statement described the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence as possessing “advanced intelligence capabilities, overseeing surveillance, espionage, and the execution of covert operations worldwide, particularly against Israeli and Iranian citizens.”
The development marks a significant escalation in tensions, as the elimination of a senior intelligence figure could have far-reaching implications for regional security dynamics.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that Israel’s Air Force carried out a wide-scale airstrike in Tehran, targeting key command centers and infrastructure linked to Iran’s security and military apparatus, including a headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as hostilities between both sides intensify.
In a statement released on Wednesday following the operation, the Israeli military said, “The Air Force completed a wide-scale airstrike in Tehran: Command centers of the Iranian terror regime were attacked.”
According to the statement, the strikes, conducted on Tuesday and guided by military intelligence, hit multiple strategic locations tied to what it described as the “Iranian terror regime.” These included command centers, ballistic missile sites, and other critical infrastructure.
Among the high-profile targets was “the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guards’ security unit, responsible for handling protests and public order violations in Iran.” Also struck was “a maintenance center of the Logistics and General Support Division of the Internal Security Forces,” alongside “a headquarters belonging to the ballistic missile array.”
The Israeli military added that several air defense systems were attacked simultaneously, noting that the objective was to expand the Air Force’s operational freedom and air superiority over Iranian territory.
“In parallel, several air defense systems were attacked with the aim of expanding the Air Force’s air superiority,” the statement said.
It further explained that the operation forms part of a broader campaign aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities. “The completed strikes are part of the phase deepening the damage to the core array of Iranian terror regime and its foundation,” the statement added.
The latest strikes mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, with Tehran yet to issue an official response at the time of filing this report.
