The governor of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed has reportedly reached a deal with president Bola Ahmed that will facilitate his defection to the ruling party–All Progressive Congress (APC) at the expense of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Bala Mohammed who serves as the chairman of the PDP governors’ forum according to a source cited by THISDAY newspaper, met president Bola Ahmed to discuss the terms of his defection to the APC.

THISDAY newspaper reports that the president offered Bala Mohammed stringent conditions which he must abide by should he defect to the ruling party.

One of the conditions is that he will not nominate the party’s governorship candidate for his state, that’s, his successor.

He will also not be handed the party structure in the state, unlike other governors who defected to the party and were handed the party’s structure in their respective states.

The governor is also mandated to apologize to the president’s son, Seyi Tinubu over his son’s, Shamshudeen Bala Mohammed’s critical remark about Seyi Tinubu when the latter visited Bauchi state for empowerment program.

Shamshudeen Bala Mohammed had in his reaction to Seyi Tinubu’s empowerment program in Bauchi state during 2025 Ramadan, cynically told the president’s son that the Bauchi people need employment, business training rather than the handouts the president’s son was giving to the Bauchi people.

The source cited by THISDAY claimed the governor has apologized on behalf of his son to Seyi Tinubu.

The privileges granted to Bala Mohammed by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu includes that he will be handed the senatorial ticket of the party in Bauchi state as it is known that he nursing senatorial ambition. He will also be given the money other defecting governors received when they defected.

Following his meeting with president Tinubu over his intention to defect to the APC, THISDAY newspaper reported that governor Bala Mohammed secretly met with the national chairman of the APC, professor Nentawe Yilwatda to seek his assistant in convincing president Bola Ahmed to soften the terms given to him. He sought the APC national chairman to plead with president Tinubu to grant him 60% of the party’s structure in Bauchi state.

The source also stated that governor Bala Mohammed decision to join APC is not purely because of his political ambition but due to the travail of his commissioner of finance, Yakubu Adamu who faces charges for money laundering and terrorism financing. THISDAY reports that Yakubu Adamu has threatened governor Bala Mohammed that he will divulge his secrets if the governor fails to take drastic actions to secure his release from detention.

The source quoted by THISDAY, described as Seyi Makinde’s ally and who is privy to the development, disclosed that Seyi Makinde feels betrayed by Bala Mohammed, accusing him of desperation and contributing to the PDP problems through his rigid and undiplomatic leadership style as the chairman of the PDP governors’ forum.

Seyi Makinde is said to be regretting his recent commitment to rescuing the party following Bala Mohammed’s reported betrayal.
