Meet ex-SEC DG Yuguda, nominated for CBN deputy governor

 

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Lamido Yuguda, a former Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The nomination, announced on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, via a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

This move aligns with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which governs such appointments. It follows the recent reassignment of the previous Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, who was appointed Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.

Here are key things to know about the ex-SEC director general

1. Former SEC Director-General

Yuguda served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2020 to 2024, where he oversaw regulatory reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capital market and improving investor confidence.

2. Veteran Central Banker

He spent several decades at the Central Bank of Nigeria and rose to become Director of the Reserve Management Department between 2010 and 2016, where he helped manage and diversify Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves.

3. International Experience with IMF

Between 1997 and 2001, Yuguda worked as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in economic policy assessments and financial programmes for African countries.

4. Strong Academic Background

He holds a B.Sc. in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1983) and an M.Sc. in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom (1991).

5. Over Three Decades in Finance and Policy

Yuguda has more than 30 years of experience in banking, economics, investment management, and financial regulation across Nigeria and international institutions.

6. Professional Certifications

He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), among other professional qualifications.

7. Career Started at the CBN

Yuguda began his career in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department, where he worked on Nigeria’s external debt records and banking supervision.
