Asuspected Nigerian soldier in Maiduguri, Borno State, has appealed to Nigerians for prayers, alleging that troops at a military base in the area are facing repeated attacks by bandits.
In a viral video obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, the individual identified himself as a member of the Nigerian Army serving in Maiduguri while describing the situation confronting soldiers stationed at the base.
In the video, the suspected soldier alleged that the military formation had been experiencing frequent attacks, which he said had resulted in the killing of troops and destruction of military vehicles.
“Nigerians, both Muslims and Christians, please and please, we the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State, are in trouble. Every day, bandits will attack our base, kill our troops and burn our vehicles,” he said in Hausa.
Speaking further in the video, the suspected soldier who didn’t mention his name, appealed to Nigerians to remember soldiers in their prayers, stating that the situation facing them had become overwhelming.
He added, “This is now beyond our power, please Nigerians we need your prayers, we left our families, loved ones and parents and we are taking shelter inside the bush, not because we don’t love our people but to defend Nigeria and Nigerians. Please, we need prayers.”
The suspected soldier also stated that the continued attacks had left the troops uncertain about how to respond to the situation.
He said, “This is now beyond our power and we have lost focus on what to do, please help us with prayers.”
He concluded the message by offering a prayer for protection.
“God please protect and save us from these evil people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Saharareporters earlier reported that the Nigerian military lost three commanding officers within one week following separate attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on military bases in Borno State.
The officers were killed during assaults on forward operations bases and combat engagements with insurgents in different parts of the state, according to security and local sources.
Reports identified the officers as Major U.I. Mairiga, who commanded the Mayenti base in Bama Local Government Area; Lt-Col Umar Faruq, commander of the Kukawa base and the 101 Brigade; and Lt-Col S.I. Iliyasu, Commanding Officer of the 222 Battalion in Konduga.
The most recent incident occurred on March 9 when insurgents reportedly attacked a military camp in Kukawa Local Government Area around midnight, killing Lt-Col Umar Faruq alongside several soldiers.
