OAU scientists record breakthrough in malaria research
Scientists at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have announced a major breakthrough in malaria research, raising fresh hope for millions living in malaria-endemic regions.
The innovation, developed in the laboratory of Olatomide Fadare, an Associate Professor of Chemistry, is reported to mark the first Protein Data Bank structure authored entirely by a Nigerian scientist.
According to reports, early findings suggest the discovery could enhance the effectiveness of malaria treatment strategies and strengthen disease-control efforts, particularly in regions where malaria remains a leading cause of death.
Experts have described the development as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing scientific capacity despite longstanding challenges in research funding and infrastructure. They noted that increased support for local research is beginning to yield measurable outcomes.
Stakeholders have called on the Federal Ministry of Health and relevant agencies to support further development, validation and clinical application of the discovery to ensure it benefits Nigerians and the wider African population.
Malaria remains one of the country’s most pressing public health challenges, accounting for thousands of deaths annually, especially among children and pregnant women. The breakthrough has renewed optimism about the potential of homegrown scientific solutions to address Africa’s health burdens.
