Notorious Kidnapper Evans Seeks Plea Bargain, Cites Rehabilitation and Education in Prison
Convicted kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, widely known as Evans, has reportedly appealed for a plea bargain, stating that he has undergone significant transformation while serving time at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.
According to information presented before the court, Evans said he has embraced education and personal reform during his incarceration and is now seeking an opportunity to reintegrate into society.
He reportedly earned a diploma in Economics from Yewa College of Education while in custody and was granted a scholarship by the Federal Government to support his studies. He is also said to be in his second year at the National Open University of Nigeria, where he is studying Political Science.
In his appeal, he argued that the skills and qualifications he has acquired while incarcerated should be put to use and not wasted. He maintained that his time in prison has reshaped his outlook and that he is prepared to contribute positively to society if granted freedom.
As part of his plea, Evans reportedly offered to forfeit 14 brand new trucks to the Lagos State Government. He proposed that the vehicles be sold and the proceeds transferred to victims affected by his criminal activities, describing the move as part of his effort toward restitution.
Legal observers note that plea bargains are subject to judicial approval and depend on the seriousness of the offence, the terms of the agreement, and the position of prosecutors and victims.
Evans was arrested in 2017 following a high-profile operation and was linked to multiple kidnapping cases involving substantial ransom payments. His case attracted nationwide attention and fueled public debate on security, justice, and rehabilitation within Nigeria’s correctional system.
As proceedings continue, the court’s decision on his request for a plea bargain is expected to generate significant public interest, especially amid ongoing conversations about accountability and the role of rehabilitation in the justice system.
