FACT CHECK: Old video of Nigerians queuing to collect bread passed off as new
A recent video on social media suggests that Nigerians in Lagos were queuing to collect a loaf of bread owing to the worsening economic crisis in the country.
In the two-minute video, some people were seen handing out a loaf of bread taken from a van to a large crowd organised by soldiers.
A section of the video clip features a static image of President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari during a political campaign, along with an emblem of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
An X user, @omoluabi1sq, posted the video on February 11, 2026, with the caption: “Nigerians lining up in Lagos State to collect one loaf of bread as economic hardship worsens”.
The post has so far gathered over 1,700 likes, 1,400 reposts, and 350 quotes. (archived here )

VERIFICATION
Clues from the video show that it was a TikTok clip published by an account identified as “theratelcommunity”.
CableCheck found that the TikTok account published the video on October 3, 2024.
Other versions of the video were also published in October 2024.
Some of the men in the video were wearing white t-shirts with the inscription, “Happy Independence”.
Possibly, the video was taken during Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration in 2024 in Lagos.
VERDICT
