How Kwara Court Remands Elderstateman, Two others Without Option of Bail Over Comment on Kwara Governor’s Brother
A Kwara State High Court has ordered the remand of Alhaji Iliasu Ibrahim, a former member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Alhaji Sola Muse, and a radio presenter popularly known as Adegogo, over discussions of an alleged $800 million contract awarded to the Kwara Governor’s elder brother, Alhaji Alimi Abdulrasaq. This contract had been a topic on social media prior to their discussion on a radio program sometime last year.
Prior to the order, the defendants had already complied with court directives. Alhaji Iliasu’s lawyer had previously informed the court on December 19, 2025, and January 7, 2027, that his client was ill and unable to attend proceedings, which led to adjournments. However, at the latest hearing, Hon. Iliasu appeared in court alongside his co-defendant. To the surprise of many, Justice E.B. Mohammed ordered their remand without bail and adjourned the case to April 25, 2026, for further hearing.
The case has ignited strong reactions within Kwara’s political landscape. Many believe that Hon. Iliasu is being targeted by the state government due to his persistent criticism of government lapses. They question why a court of competent jurisdiction would order the remand of an 83-year-old man with health issues without granting bail, especially when the court has not yet declared him guilty.
Legal analysts have also criticized the decision, viewing it as a move by the state prosecution to silence dissent and restrict media freedom. Over the years, authorities have arrested numerous journalists, citizens, and social critics for speaking out against the government, raising concerns about increasing repression and suppression of free speech.
