Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has denied having any personal dispute with President Bola Tinubu, but declared that political efforts to unseat the current APC-led administration have begun.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai said the struggle to remove the government is “just beginning,” adding that some people in power are uncomfortable with his return to Nigeria.

He dismissed claims of wrongdoing and insisted that no credible case exists against him. According to him, if there was any valid allegation, it would have been proven long ago. He also stated that he is willing to honour any proper legal invitation.

His comments come after a tense incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where security operatives allegedly attempted to detain him after he arrived from Cairo. His media aide said he refused to follow the officers because there was no formal warrant. His international passport was reportedly seized before the operatives withdrew.

El-Rufai and his lawyers described the action as unconstitutional and politically motivated.
On his relationship with Tinubu, the former governor said there is no personal rift between them. He explained that their differences are based on political objectives, not personal issues.

“If your objectives are different from mine, then we should part ways peacefully,” he said.
He also denied any fallout with his successor, Uba Sani, saying political disagreements should not be personalised.

While ruling out any immediate plan to contest for office, El-Rufai confirmed that he is aligning with an emerging coalition to challenge the current government.

“Since I contributed to bringing them into power, I must also contribute to removing them,” he said, adding that political activities will intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle.
