Wike-Backed Faction Declares Monday Takeover of PDP National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza
The protracted leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic new turn, with the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, vowing to physically take control of the party’s national headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Monday.
The declaration was made by the faction’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent recognition of the leadership structure
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Anyanwu said the faction would no longer tolerate what he described as “illegal occupation” of the party secretariat by individuals he claimed lack legitimacy.
“By the grace of God, come next Monday, we will take over Wadata Plaza. That is the lawful secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party and we are going there to resume our legitimate duties,” Anyanwu declared.
He argued that the PDP’s internal crisis had dragged on for too long and accused the opposing camp of frustrating efforts to reconcile the party through various court processes and political manoeuvres.
The Wike-aligned group has consistently maintained that the outcome of the 2023 PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which affirmed the continuation of the Damagum-led caretaker committee, remains valid and binding.
They further claim that INEC’s latest correspondence acknowledging the current leadership has now given them the legal and moral authority to enforce their control over party structures, including the national secretariat.
Security has already been beefed up around Wadata Plaza in anticipation of possible Monday showdown, while party stakeholders have appealed to both sides to exercise restraint and avoid any action that could lead to violence or further damage the PDP’s already battered image.
Political analysts say Monday’s planned takeover attempt could mark the most serious physical confrontation yet in the long-running battle for control of the main opposition party.
The PDP has been embroiled in leadership turmoil since 2022, following the fallout between Nyesom Wike and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
As the nation watches anxiously, all eyes are now on Wadata Plaza and what transpires on Monday, February 9, 2026.
