Abuja Court Jails Ex-NEXIM MD Robert Orya For 490 Years Over N2.4Billion Fraud
Justice F.E. Messiri of the FCT High Court delivered the judgment, finding Orya guilty on 49-count charges bordering on fraud and abuse of office.
A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Robert Orya, to a cumulative 490 years imprisonment over a N2.4 billion fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured Orya’s conviction on Thursday, February 5, 2026, after years of prosecution over alleged financial crimes committed during his tenure as NEXIM boss between 2011 and 2016.
Justice F.E. Messiri of the FCT High Court delivered the judgment, finding Orya guilty on 49-count charges bordering on fraud and abuse of office.
The court sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment on each count, amounting to a total of 490 years behind bars.
The statement read, “The EFCC, today, February 5, 2026, secured the conviction of Robert Orya, a former Managing Director, Nigerian Import Export Bank, NEXIM (2011-2016), for a fraud of about N2.4 Billion.
“Orya who was prosecuted by EFCC’s Samuel Ugwuegbulam, was convicted by Justice F.E. Messiri of the FCT High court, Abuja and sentenced to ten years imprisonment on each of the 49-count charge.”
On Thursday, November 25, 2021, the EFCC arraigned Orya before Justice F. E. Messiri of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Apo, Abuja, on a 49-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, impersonation, misappropriation, official corruption, fraud, and abuse of office.
He allegedly abused his position as the managing director of the bank to obtain over one billion, three hundred and sixty-eight million naira (N1,368,000,000) from NEXIM Bank.
