Evangelist Roland Olubukola Olomola, widely known as Baba Ara, was a Nigerian gospel musician and producer from Ilesha, Osun State. His music, deeply rooted in spirituality and celestial gospel rhythms, gained immense popularity within and beyond Nigeria.
His Life and Music Career
Baba Ara was born on July 2, 1962. He first made his mark in the gospel music scene with his debut recorded song, “Covenant,” which he performed with the choir of Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Okiki Imole Parish, Sagamu. His final album, released before his passing, was titled “Last Advice.”
Baba Ara’s music was celebrated for its soul-lifting messages and unique fusion of traditional gospel sounds. He was a key figure in the Celestial Church music scene and remained a dedicated gospel artist until his death.
The Mystery Surrounding His Death
Baba Ara died on August 31, 2004, at just 42 years old, at the peak of his career. His sudden death led to various rumors and speculations, including:
1. Drug-related theory: Some claimed he had ingested a sachet of cocaine, which burst inside him while attempting to travel abroad.
2. Occult rumors: Others speculated that he had sold his soul to secret societies in exchange for fame and fortune, and his death was a consequence.
3. Feud with a church leader: Another theory suggested that a fallout with his close friend, a shepherd in the Celestial Church of Christ, contributed to his untimely passing.
Despite these claims, there was no verified cause of his death, and many of his followers continued to celebrate his life and music.
His Legacy
Even decades after his passing, Baba Ara’s music remains relevant, with many of his albums still selling in the market. His close friend and manager, Adedapo James Fasanya (Bengho 2), who worked with him from the early 1990s until his death, continues to share his story.
