The Federal Government’s choice to give Chief Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, clemency has continued to be a topic of public debate.

The dispute has extended beyond the pardon itself, according to The Sun, with the deletion of Igboho’s name from the government’s wanted list fueling discussions on justice, fairness, and long-standing accusations of favoritism that have frequently been leveled against President Bola Tinubu’s administration in its response to separatist movements.

Ighoho is well-known for his role in the campaign for an Oduduwa Republic. He had previously been associated to claims of terrorism, much like other separatist leaders throughout the nation.

Following a well-known security raid on his Ibadan residence in 2021, which is said to have led to his flight from Nigeria and eventual exile, these accusations came to light.

Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Assembly (ACF), responded to the news by saying that the pardon was not unexpected.

He claimed that behaviors of this kind have occurred before under President Tinubu’s government, indicating that the choice was in line with established procedures rather than a radical break from prior practices.

The ACF secretary answered, “No, it’s not nepotism on the part of the federal government to take Igboho’s name off the wanted list,” when questioned about it. “And it is, beyond a doubt.

However, from the perspective of the current federal government, where is the novelty in this? Since this government came into power, such a step fits squarely within the established pattern of actions.
