JUST IN: Saudi King admitted in hospital over medical test
90-year-old Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is currently undergoing medical tests at a hospital in Riyadh, the Royal Court has confirmed.
In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency on Friday, the court said: “The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques — may God protect him — is undergoing medical examinations today at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh.”
Details of the monarch’s condition were not disclosed. Discussions about the king’s health are rare, though he has been admitted for medical procedures several times in recent years.
In 2024, the Royal Court announced that King Salman had recovered from lung infections. He was also hospitalised in May 2022 for a colonoscopy and remained in hospital for just over a week for additional tests and rest.
Earlier that year, in March 2022, state media said he underwent “successful medical tests” and had the battery of his pacemaker replaced. In 2020, he underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder.
King Salman became the seventh ruler of Saudi Arabia in 2015 following the death of his predecessor, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. Although he remains on the throne, his son, Mohammed bin Salman, was named crown prince in 2017 and currently serves as the kingdom’s de facto ruler.
Born in Riyadh in 1935, King Salman is the 25th son of the kingdom’s founder, King Abdulaziz Al Saud. He received his early education at the Princes’ School in Riyadh, where he studied religious and modern sciences and memorised the Holy Quran in full.
Over the decades, he has been regarded as a key custodian of royal family affairs and a trusted adviser to several Saudi kings. He began his public service career in 1954 as Acting Governor of Riyadh and was formally appointed Governor of the Riyadh Region in 1963, a position he held for many years.
