Former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose has cautioned that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could struggle to remain politically relevant ahead of the 2027 general election if it does not present former Anambra State governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate.

Fayose made the remarks during a political programme on Arise Television, where he described Obi as the driving force behind the ADC’s growing public appeal. He argued that the party’s current visibility and momentum are closely linked to Obi’s political influence rather than to its internal structures.

“Peter Obi is the life in ADC. I didn’t say there are no other human beings in ADC, but others are largely spent forces,” Fayose said.

The former governor noted that Obi’s presence in any political party tends to transform its electoral prospects, pointing to what he described as the dramatic rise of the Labour Party during the 2023 elections following Obi’s emergence as its presidential candidate.

“Before Obi went to Labour, the party was barely known. But because of him, people won elections into the House of Representatives,” he said.

Fayose added that Obi’s popularity cuts across party lines and would remain strong even if he were to contest on the platform of a relatively smaller party, such as the Accord Party.

Although he declined to forecast whether Obi would win the 2027 presidential election, Fayose insisted that leaving him out of the ADC’s ticket would seriously weaken the party’s prospects.

“I’m not saying Obi will win or will not win the election. But I can tell you this: if ADC fails to field Obi, their situation will be worse than before they even came together,” he said.
