Governor Abba Kabir Dismisses Kwankwaso’s Claim Of Betrayal, Reveals Reason For His Defection
The Kano state political atmosphere is charged due to the tension surrounding governor Abba Kabir’s reported defection to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
The governor was slated to officially announce his switch to the APC on Monday, 5th of January, 2026, however, due to effort at convincing notable members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and other political calculations, the event was shifted to 12th of January.
While Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso accuses the governor of betrayal, Reliant.ng gathered from an insider that governor Abba Kabir’s decision to defect to the APC stems from an underground conspiracy against him by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the leadership of the NNPP.
The source revealed that Abba Kabir defection to the APC is his fight for his political survival and in response to his discovery of Kwankwaso’s insincerity with him. The governor discovered that his political mentor was clandestinely plotting with the NNPP leadership to deny him the NNPP governorship ticket for 2027.
The governor became aware of the conspiracy against him during the NNPP state Congress in Kano state. The governor realized that his nominees for important positions in the party were declined and members of the party’s leadership in the state who were loyal to him, were replaced by new faces nominated by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. This development made the governor to start believing the rumour that his mentor was conspiring against him– will not give him the party’s governorship ticket for Kano.
“Governor Abba Kabir has done everything he (Kwankwaso) wanted but doing Kwankwaso’s bidding is not even the problem. The governor never had issue listening to the man he considers his father and mentor. But you know, you can not be doing good to someone and the person is planning your downfall.
The governor did everything to ensure that he had no friction with Kwankwaso but never knew that Kwankwaso was plotting against him. Aside from the charade for state Congress on December 8th in the state where the governor had no say, Kwankwaso was being insincere with Abba. Why were almost all the nominees from the governor rejected? Even those who had good relationship with the governor were dropped because he (Kwankwaso) was plotting to deny him reelection not knowing that the governor knows”.
The source accused Kwankwaso of misleading the public by claiming that governor Abba Kabir betrayed him. He enjoined the former governor to tell the public the truth.
“It’s only a tree that you want to cut down and it will remain still. Governor Abba can not just allow him kîll his political career and do nothing about it. He has sought refuge in APC and I think he (Kwankwaso) should stop lying to the public to draw sympathy. He is the betrayal here”, the source stated.
