Venezuela gets new president after Maduro’s arrest

Venezuela now has a new leader after the Supreme Court asked Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to step in following the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro by United States forces.

The ruling was issued by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, which said the decision was needed to keep government running during the president’s absence.

The court directed Rodríguez to assume the role of acting president to keep state affairs stable and protect the country.

The court also stated that more meetings will be held to agree on the legal steps that will guide the country during this period.

It said that the goal is to keep the government functioning while Maduro remains in custody.

Maduro was taken into custody early Saturday during a U.S. operation, a move that has triggered strong political reactions at home and abroad.

With the latest decision, Rodríguez is now in charge of the nation’s executive duties until further notice.

Maduro has since been moved to New York, where he is expected to face trial over arms and drug trafficking allegations.
