Why Datti Baba-Ahmed Did Not Attend Peter Obi’s Defection Occasion To ADC Revealed
Former senator and vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed was conspicuously absent at the occasion where Peter Obi formally defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State on 31st of December, 2025.
The event which was attended by powerful members of the opposition including former senate president and now national chairman of the ADC, David Mark; former governor Aminu Tambuwal, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; and host of others, was not attended by Datti Baba-Ahmed, Peter Obi’s running mate in 2023, for strategic reason.
Reliant.ng was informed by one of Peter Obi’s aides who does not want her name stated in this publication, that Datti Baba-Ahmed’s absence at the event was politically strategic and not because he is unhappy about Peter Obi’s decision to join the ADC. The source revealed that Datti Baba-Ahmed will not leave the Labour Party now– a strategy for ensuring that the Labour Party is not hijacked by political forces desperate to undermine the party while targeting the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti. Hence, Datti Baba-Ahmed who had begun reconciling the warring factions in Labour Party, is to work with Alex Otti who still considers seeking his reelection in Labour Party rather than joining the ADC.
The source added that if the ongoing leadership crisis in Labour Party is not resolved in a manner the Abia State governor wants, Datti Baba-Ahmed and Otti will have no choice than to leave the Labour Party for the ADC.
“There is no problem; it’s all strategic. Datti remains in Labour Party to protect our interest. Only Alex Otti should not be left to handle the ongoing issue in the party. As a result, Datti Baba-Ahmed and Alex Otti will continue working together to know if the LP can be redeemed especially as Otti considers seeking reelection through LP. He believes the party already resonates with the Abia State people. Also, the governor does not want to be confrontational to Tinubu by joining the ADC not because he supports Tinubu but because he knows that the Tinubu’s presidency does not regard democratic values”, she stated.
