ISWAP Attacks Buratai Battalion HQ in Borno, Army Neutralises Terrorist Drone

Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched an overnight attack on the Buratai Battalion Headquarters in Borno State, using mortar shells in a coordinated assault that underscored the group’s evolving tactics.
Security sources disclosed that the terrorists deployed drones during the attack to guide mortar fire and improve targeting accuracy — a growing trend in insurgent operations across the North-East. The assault triggered brief but intense exchanges of gunfire between the attackers and Nigerian troops stationed at the base.

According to military reports, the Nigerian Army responded swiftly, successfully shutting down the hostile drone, thereby disrupting the terrorists’ ability to accurately direct their mortar strikes. This decisive action is believed to have prevented further damage and casualties.
Following the clash, troops conducted a thorough sweep of the surrounding area and recovered several Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) shells, as well as spent bullet casings, indicating the scale and intent of the attack.

Although no official casualty figures were released at the time of filing this report, military sources confirmed that the base remained firmly under the control of Nigerian forces, with normal operations restored shortly after the incident.

The attack highlights ISWAP’s continued reliance on asymmetric warfare, including the use of commercial drones for reconnaissance and battlefield coordination. However, the army’s ability to neutralise the drone reflects improved counter-drone measures and heightened preparedness among frontline troops.
