JUST IN: Police Present Two Akwa-Ibom Masquerades in Court Over Alleged Human Rights Violations.
Police in Akwa Ibom have taken two members of local masquerade groups to a magistrate’s court over alleged human‑rights violations.
The state police command arrested the leader of the “Ekpo” cultural masquerade, Uwem Umanah, on suspicion of illegal assembly, extortion and blocking a public highway .
A second individual, David Michael, was also detained while in full Ekpo regalia .
Both were arraigned before the magistrate’s court in Uyo, where the judge declared the arrests unlawful and ordered their immediate release, as well as compensation for the rights violations . Investigations are ongoing and further details are expected.
