China strengthens ties with Nigeria, promising security cooperation and trade expansion

China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria, pledging support for the country’s anti-terrorism efforts as well as expanded cooperation in trade, investment and cultural exchange. This followed a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday between the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, where both sides reviewed progress in their long-standing partnership.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy, Dunhai expressed satisfaction with the pace of bilateral engagement, noting that the China–Nigeria comprehensive strategic partnership had entered what he described as “the fast track.” He reiterated China’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria on global and regional matters, referencing themes in China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and stressing that the two countries have consistently supported each other on issues of core interest.

The ambassador also stated that China fully supports Nigeria’s efforts to tackle terrorism and is prepared to collaborate on implementing zero-tariff treatment for Nigerian exports. He added that both nations would begin preparations for two major diplomatic milestones: the 55th anniversary of China–Nigeria relations and the 2026 China–Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges. These initiatives, he said, would further consolidate trust and enhance mutually beneficial cooperation.

Tuggar, in response, described China as Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner and expressed appreciation for China’s steady support towards the country’s economic and social development. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the one-China principle and highlighted the government’s desire to broaden cooperation in manufacturing, trade and investment.

Nigeria and China established diplomatic relations in 1971, and their collaboration has expanded significantly over the decades, particularly in trade, infrastructure and development-oriented projects. Bilateral trade surged to approximately $22.6bn in 2023, making Nigeria one of China’s most significant African partners. Chinese companies continue to play a major role in key Nigerian infrastructure projects, including rail systems, ports and energy facilities.
