Senator Ali Ndume has expressed new concerns regarding Nigeria’s surveillance capabilities, stating that the country låcks continuous satellite coverage, despite having several satellites in orbit.
He made these comments during a tense discussion with Senate President Godswill Akpabio at Tuesday’s plenary session.
During the Senate meeting broadcast on Channels Television, Ndume highlighted that Nigeria’s ongoing security issues are partially due to the inability to monitor crîminal activities in real-time.
He emphasized that enhancing surveillance technology is crucial for addressing the increasing incidents of banditry, kidnappings, and insurgent attacks in various parts of the country.
As he presented his points, Ndume directly informed Akpabio, asserting that he was sharing verified information. He remarked, “I’m giving you information Mr. President, please.
We have four satellites. Nigeria has four satellites, and we don’t have satellite coverage or surveillance 24 hours. We don’t have it.” His statement led to a momentary silence in the chamber as lawmakers reflected on the seriousness of his assertion.
Ndume further argued that the absence of continuous satellite monitoring forces security agencies to react to incidents rather than prevent them.
He noted that the shortcomings in surveillance capabilities impede intelligence gathering and limit the military and other security forces’ ability to track armed groups in challenging terrains.
The senator stressed that Nigeria’s investment in space technology has not effectively improved security operations and called for a reassessment of the use of existing satellites.
He urged the government to focus on modern surveillance systems that can deliver live imaging, thermal detection, and rapid response support.
