Escaped Inmate Linked to 2020 UNIBEN Murder Case Arrested Again Over Death of 26-Year-Old Woman

A 30-year-old man identified by police as Michael Ezenwai, who was previously declared wanted after escaping from the Oko Correctional Centre during the 2020 EndSARS jailbreak, has been arrested over the alleged killing of 26-year-old Christabel Egedefe in Agbor, Delta State.

According to Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe on Friday, the suspect was among those allegedly involved in the 2020 murder of a University of Benin (UNIBEN) student, Miss Uwaila Omorzuwa, inside a church in Benin City. He had been in custody for that case before escaping during the jailbreak.

Edafe said the latest incident occurred when Ezenwai allegedly went to the victim’s residence to rob the family. In the process of attempting to steal Christabel’s motorcycle, a struggle reportedly ensued, during which he allegedly pushed her. She hit her head on a wall and collapsed. Believing she had only fainted, the suspect allegedly covered her with a blanket, but she later died.

Police said the suspect initially implicated the victim’s father during interrogation, leading to the man’s arrest. However, after six days, the father was released when Ezenwai retracted the claim, saying he only mentioned him because the victim’s father threatened him and he did not want to “die alone.”

The suspect reportedly told investigators that he had no intention of killing the young woman and that the fatal injury occurred during the struggle for the motorcycle. He also allegedly took the victim’s phone.

According to the police, Ezenwai was eventually arrested after attempting to have the stolen phone flashed the following day. The technician who received the phone became suspicious and alerted the authorities.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
