President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Edward Onoja, as the new Director-General of Maritime Services.

The announcement has been met with widespread congratulations from political associates, stakeholders in the maritime industry, and citizens of Kogi State who hailed the appointment as well-deserved

Edward Onoja, a close ally of former Governor Yahaya Bello, is known for his extensive experience in governance and public administration. His new role places him at the helm of Nigeria’s maritime sector — a strategic industry critical to trade, shipping, and national economic development.

In his congratulatory message, supporters described Onoja’s appointment as a recognition of competence, loyalty, and capacity. Many expressed confidence that he would bring reform, innovation, and accountability to the maritime sector.
As Director-General, Onoja is expected to work closely with the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to enhance port efficiency, promote blue economy opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security framework.

This appointment marks another major inclusion of experienced technocrats and political leaders in President Tinubu’s drive to reposition strategic sectors for sustainable growth.
