Doctors Smile As Government  Implements ₦300,000 Allowance For Medical Doctors

In a major move to boost morale in the health sector, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved the payment of a ₦300,000 special allowance for medical doctors working across state-owned hospitals and health institutions.

The new allowance, which takes immediate effect, is part of the governor’s broader commitment to improving welfare and working conditions for health professionals in the state.

According to government sources, the decision followed several consultations with the Kogi State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), as part of efforts to curb the brain drain affecting the state’s healthcare system.
Governor Ododo, while signing off on the allowance, emphasized that no sector thrives without a motivated workforce. He described medical personnel as “frontline heroes whose welfare directly impacts the lives of citizens.”

“We cannot build a healthy Kogi without taking care of those who take care of us. This allowance is both a token of appreciation and a motivation for our doctors to continue serving diligently,” Ododo reportedly said.

The move has been widely applauded by medical workers across the state, many of whom described it as “timely and encouraging”, especially at a time when many healthcare professionals are leaving the country in search of better pay

The gesture is expected to reduce attrition rates in the state health service and improve the overall quality of healthcare delivery.

With this initiative, Kogi joins a growing list of states taking proactive steps to enhance the welfare of their medical staff — a key strategy to ensure sustainable and effective healthcare delivery.
