EFCC Confirms Ongoing Investigation Into Ex-Delta Governor Okowa, Denies Political Protection
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that its investigation into alleged corruption by former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is ongoing, dismissing claims that he is being shielded due to his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede addressed the matter during a press conference at the commission’s headquarters, marking his second year in office. Speaking through Sylvanus Tahir, Director of Legal and Prosecution and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olukoyede emphasized the EFCC’s independence from political influence.
“Someone asked whether politicians who switch to the ruling party are shielded. The simple answer is no,” Olukoyede said. “To the best of my knowledge, the former governor of Delta State’s case is still under investigation, and justice will be served in due course.”
He added that the commission is committed to thorough investigations, avoiding rushed court proceedings that could undermine outcomes. “When we go to court, Nigerians will see what the case is all about. There is no attempt or intention to shield anybody on account of switching parties, certainly not under this chairman,” Olukoyede stated.
