NAIJA @65: PAINS THAT PURGE, GAINS THAT PLEDGE

As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, the nation is a canvas of contrasting colours, a symphony of sighs and smiles, an evidence to the resilience of its people. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Nigeria is striving to redefine its destiny, navigating the complexities of its 65-year journey.
*THE PAINS: A LITANY OF LAMENTATIONS*
The road to progress has been fraught with potholes of poverty, insecurity, and infrastructural decay. Many Nigerians are still grappling with the harsh realities of economic instability, while the Boko Haram insurgency continues to cast a dark shadow over the nation. However, as the Bible says, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning” (Psalm 30:5) This too shall pass.
*THE GAINS: A BEACON OF HOPE*
Despite the challenges, Nigeria’s progress is palpable. The nation’s economy is showing signs of growth, with a 4.23% GDP growth rate in Q2 2025, the fastest in four years. Inflation has dropped to 20.12%, the lowest in three years, while foreign reserves have increased to $42.03 billion. The government has made significant investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, with over N330 billion cash transfers to eight million poor families and N99.5 billion loan disbursements to 510,000 students. As the scripture says, “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11)
*SPEAKING HEALING, NOT ILL*
As we celebrate Nigeria’s 65th anniversary, it’s essential to speak healing and not ill of our nation. We should focus on the positives, highlighting the progress made so far, and encouraging our leaders to do more. By doing so, we can create a sense of national pride and unity, which is essential for our collective progress. As the saying goes, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21) Let us use our tongues to bless our nation, not to curse it.
*OPTIMISM OVER PESSIMISM*
We should be optimistic about Nigeria’s future, not pessimistic. With a renewed focus on economic reforms, security, and infrastructure development, Nigeria is poised to take its rightful place on the global stage. Our youth are the future, and investing in their education, skills, and well-being is crucial for our nation’s prosperity. As the scripture says, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9)
*REASONING LIKE A MAN WHO IS NOT IN PRISON*
We should reason like a man who is not in prison, thinking outside the box, innovating, and creating opportunities that will drive growth and development. By doing so, we can unlock our potential and unlock the potential of our nation. As the saying goes, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18) Let us have a vision for a better Nigeria, a nation that is prosperous, peaceful, and just.
*FROM WHERE WE ARE COMING FROM*
Nigeria has come a long way since independence, navigating through military rule, civil war, and economic crises. However, we have always emerged stronger, more resilient, and more determined. Our appreciation of the nation’s progress is an application for more. By acknowledging our achievements, we can build momentum and strive for even greater heights.
*WHAT NIGERIA HAS DONE FOR US*
Nigeria has provided us with a rich cultural heritage, diverse traditions, and a sense of national identity. Our nation has also produced world-class professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders who have made significant contributions to various fields. We can never repay the debt of gratitude we owe to our nation, but we can show our appreciation by contributing to its growth and development.
*WHAT WE CAN DO FOR NIGERIA*
We can start by being responsible citizens, paying our taxes, obeying the law, and participating in the democratic process. We can also invest in our nation’s future by supporting entrepreneurship, innovation, and education. By working together, we can build a better Nigeria for ourselves and future generations. As the scripture says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4) Let us join hands in making Nigeria a safe haven, a nation that is prosperous, peaceful, and just.
*PRAYING FOR OUR LEADERS*
Let us pray for our rulers and leaders, that they may be guided by wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to the well-being of our nation. As the scripture says, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May those who love you be secure'” (Psalm 122:6) Let us use our tongues to pray for our nation, not to curse it. By doing so, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and our nation.
Be a real Nigerian. Be a proud Nigerian. Be an accountable Nigerian. Live by the citizen’s code.
