Nnamdi Kanu Raises Alarm: “I Could Die Suddenly” in DSS Custody

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has disclosed the illnesses he is contending with while in custody at the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu disclosed that he is struggling with tinnitus and sleep deprivation, which he described as some of the “gravest threats” to his survival.

In a complaint and appeal letter to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kanu stated that Tinnitus “worsens my hypertension,” increasing his risk of stroke, collapse, and sudden death.

He revealed additional conditions, including liver disease, pancreatic issues, kidney problems, bladder complications, prostate concerns, and white matter disease. Additionally, he suffers from sleep apnea and most notably tinnitus—the persistent internal “chirping” sound in his ears.

The letter, titled “The Danger of Tinnitus and Sleep Deprivation,” states in part: “One of the most serious threats to my well-being today is tinnitus. The constant ringing in my ears goes beyond mere annoyance; it deprives me of sleep, sometimes making rest utterly impossible. It also worsens my hypertension.”

It intensifies chest pain, increases the risk of fainting, and adds psychological stress; it weakens my body’s natural ability to heal.

Doctors from DSS had initially suggested draining fluid from my inner ear, but they ultimately decided against it due to the risk of permanent hearing loss. Since then, no significant attempts have been made to address this condition, despite its cumulative and potentially devastating effects.

Lack of sleep, coupled with my existing hypertension, organ strain, and potassium imbalance, puts me at an immediate risk for a stroke, collapse, or sudden death.

Ignoring tinnitus and sleep deprivation demonstrates a careless indifference to the potentially life-threatening consequences of untreated conditions.

The IPOB leader also alleged that Dr. Nasiru Mohammed from the DSS manipulated his medical records, even though symptoms persisted.

He stated, “As soon as Dr. Nasiru Mohammed took control, he started altering my test results by indicating normal potassium levels when they were actually dangerously low.”

When asked why a potassium-sparing drug like Eplerenone was still prescribed despite my potassium levels reportedly being normal, he offered no medical explanation.

Under his supposed care, I kept experiencing frequent nosebleeds; episodes of fainting and near-collapse; severe light-headedness; persistent chest pains on my left side; debilitating headaches; and swelling of the feet.

During my time in DSS custody, more than 50 blood samples have been taken; however, under the care of DSS-appointed doctors, there has been no improvement in my health.

He told NMA that DSS had intimidated and silenced his long-time physician, Dr. Cfine.

My longtime personal physician, Dr. Cfine, who has provided me with dedicated care for many years, was denied access and silenced through intimidation. This situation persisted until the involvement of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a world-renowned surgeon and esteemed medical educator.

“He said that his timely intervention saved me from an imminent collapse.”

Kanu disclosed that with Cfine’s professional and ethical care, his potassium level increased slightly from 2.1 to 2.9 mmol/L—still below safe levels but a definite indication of genuine medical improvement. His episodes of nosebleeds, fainting, and light-headedness stopped occurring.

The swelling in my feet has reduced, and the headaches have diminished to an occasional occurrence.

Furthermore, Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji has verified and recorded a range of systemic health issues. These include diseases affecting the liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, prostate, as well as white matter disease; sleep apnea; and most critically tinnitus—a persistent internal “chirping” sound in my ears that often makes it impossible to sleep and continues to make my life unbearable.

It is not an overstatement to claim that without the intervention of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, my health would have declined irreparably. However, rather than supporting him, the DSS has resorted to using the same intimidation tactics they employed against Dr. Cfine.
