Federal Government Reaffirms Free Tuition in Technical Colleges, Warns Principals Against Illegal Charges
The Federal Government has restated that tuition and all officially approved fees in the nation’s Federal Technical Colleges remain free, cautioning school heads against collecting any unauthorised payments from students.
In a statement released Wednesday and shared on the Ministry of Education’s X handle Thursday, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa said the government fully funds tuition to ensure every Nigerian child can access technical education. Circulars reinforcing this directive have been sent to all colleges, he added.
Alausa explained that the government covers the cost of key items and services including boarding, uniforms, textbooks, exercise books, prospectuses, ID cards, stationery, clubs and societies, medical care, vocational training, utilities, security, websites/e-result, Skool Media, extra lessons, and insurance.
“Parents are encouraged to report any illegal charges directly to the ministry via hotlines 0803 657 6733 or 0803 637 3796, or by email at tse@education.gov.ng,” the statement noted.
While core expenses are fully paid by the government, boarding students are expected to supply personal items such as toiletries, bedding, clothing, and a ream of A4 paper for registration.
The minister stressed that the initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places Technical and Vocational Education and Training at the center of human capital development and national competitiveness.
“No Nigerian child should be denied access to technical education because of illegal charges. By investing in education, we are building a stronger, self-reliant Nigeria,” Alausa said, assuring that strict monitoring will quickly address any violations of the free-education policy.
