Kwara PDP Crisis Deepens as Moro LG Faction Rejects Saraki Consensus Candidate, Elects Own Chairman

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has intensified as a faction in Moro Local Government Area rejected the consensus candidate reportedly endorsed by Dr. Bukola Saraki and elected its own chairman.

The Saraki faction in Moro Local Government on Saturday held a press briefing at the residence of Hon. Raliat Aremu Adifa, where party stakeholders expressed their displeasure over the move to jettison the earlier consensus arrangement.

Speaking at the event, Hon. AbdulRazaq O. Ibrahim recalled that Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki had earlier directed that he would personally appoint chairmen for all 16 local government areas in the state. According to him, four aspirants had submitted their names for consideration as Moro PDP chairman:

Hon. Ahmed Isiaka Oniwa (Megida Ward)

Hon. Joseph Olakunle Aweda JP (Lanwa Ward)

Comrade Jimoh Shehu Okete (Malete Ward)

Hon. Jimoh Abdulkareem Abati (Abati Alara Ward)

Ibrahim explained that after Saraki delayed announcing a choice, party elders in Moro brokered a consensus, producing Hon. Jimoh Abdulkareem Abati as the sole candidate while the other aspirants stepped down voluntarily.

“We stand by Dr. Saraki’s initial pronouncement and still believe in his leadership. Any elective congress at Bode Sa’adu or anywhere else is not accepted by us, and we would resist it,” Ibrahim stated.

Also speaking, Hon. Lateef Bolanle Lanwa condemned plans to hold the congress at “Kara,” describing the venue as unconventional and unsuitable for such a major party exercise. He stressed that consensus has been the tradition of Moro PDP, ensuring unity and stability over the years.

“We chose this gentleman approach to avoid bloodshed and destruction of lives and property. That is why we gathered here at the residence of our leader, Hon. Raliat Aremu Adifa, a woman who has been part of the Saraki Dynasty for over 30 years,” Lanwa said.

The stakeholders reaffirmed their loyalty to Dr. Saraki but warned that if the congress proceeds against their wishes, they may be forced to consider “other actions.”

The development highlights a deepening division within the Moro PDP and raises fresh concerns about the party’s cohesion ahead of future political activities in Kwara State.
