Villagers Cry Out As Teaching Hospital Stops Treatment Of Banditry Victims Over Unpaid Bills
In an open letter addressed to the governor, community leaders, Barnabas Chinge, and Comrade Raphael Joshua said the August 24, 2025, bandits attack on the community left several children battling life-threatening injuries and dozens of families homeless.
Residents of Angwan Rimi village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State have been thrown into tears, forcing them to send a Save Our Soul (SOS) to Governor Uba Sani after the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital reportedly stopped treating their children injured in a recent bandit attack over unpaid medical bills.
In an open letter addressed to the governor, community leaders, Barnabas Chinge, and Comrade Raphael Joshua said the August 24, 2025, bandits attack on the community left several children battling life-threatening injuries and dozens of families homeless.
“Our children remain in pain and we can no longer afford their treatment,” part of the letter read. “So far, we have spent over N500,000 on drugs and cannot buy more.”
According to the villagers, the heavily armed attackers stormed Angwan Rimi in the dead of night, shooting sporadically and setting houses ablaze.
By dawn, at least seven residents were confirmed dead, while scores were wounded.
Survivors recounted how the gunmen carted away food supplies and livestock, leaving the agrarian settlement devastated.
The victims were first stabilised at the Federal Medical Centre, Kafanchan, before being transferred to Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital on August 27 for advanced care.
But treatment has reportedly been halted at the Teaching Hospital after an initial N500,000 deposit from Kauru council chairman, Bashir Tanko Dawaki, was exhausted, leaving an outstanding balance of nearly N1 million.
According to a letter addressed to the Kauru council chairman by the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. A. Musa Tabari, the hospital management said it already has an outstanding bill of over N400,000, and requested the sum of N1 million to offset the outstanding bill and continue treatment for five victims admitted in the hospital.
The letter dated September 1, 2025, and obtained by SaharaReporters on Sunday, alongside horrifying photos of the victims, was titled, “Retirement of Expenditure on the Donation of N500,000 to Bandit Attack Victims in Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital and Request for Top Up.”
The letter read, “The chairman may wish to recall that bandit attack victims from Kauru Local Government Area were referred to Barry Dikko Teaching Hospital on 25th August, 2025, where a deposit of N500,000 was made for their treatment.
“This is to forward the detailed expenditure so far made on the treatment of the five (5) victims as captured in the table and copy of receipts (hereby attached) with a negative balance of (-) N415,950.
“As the victims will continue to receive our professional care, we solicit for an additional deposit of N1,000,000 to cover for the above outstanding expenses and for their continued treatment.”
While they called for an urgent intervention, the community thanked Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, House of Representatives member Muktar Zakari Chawai, and state lawmaker Haruna Barnabas Danmaigona for assisting with the burial of the seven people killed in the raid.
They urged Governor Sani to immediately offset the hospital bill and order the resumption of treatment for the wounded children.
However, as of press time, neither the Kaduna State Government nor Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital has responded to the desperate appeal of the villagers.
