NUPENG breaks silence over allegations of extortion at depots
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has refuted allegations of extortion at fuel depots, calling the claims a “blackmail calculated to tarnish the good image of the union.” The union believes these allegations are a direct result of its recent dispute with Dangote Refineries over unionisation.
In a statement, NUPENG claimed it is being targeted with “lies,” “distortions of facts,” and “misinformation” on social media. The union addressed specific allegations, including claims that it aids smuggling, collects a N1.00 levy on every liter of fuel, and contributed to the failure of government refineries.
NUPENG clarified that collections at depots are not solely its doing. It noted that the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD-NUPENG) is just one of many trade unions and associations operating in the informal downstream sector. Other groups, such as the Truck Owners Association, Independent Marketers Association (IPMAN), and Major Marketers Association, also collect dues from their members at these locations.
The union explained that it often assists other stakeholders in collecting their dues because PTD-NUPENG members are highly visible and command significant influence. The funds collected by NUPENG itself are used for essential services for its members, including: Quarterly safety trainings with agencies like the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police; Health insurance through LEADWAY Health Insurance for its members, who often lack employer-provided benefited; Security funds to mobilize security agencies against truck hijackers and other criminals on the highways and General union dues.
NUPENG concluded that the accusations of extortion are a “blackmail” tactic and that it is challenging to defend the union against an “already biased public opinion” due to its influence and the public’s general opposition to any industrial actions that disrupt their daily lives.
The union stated that many stakeholders, including major marketers and truck owners, are quietly supportive of NUPENG’s efforts to push back against a potential “takeover” by Dangote, even though they are unwilling to openly join the fight.
