Again! Ebenezer Obey dispels death rumours

Veteran juju musician, Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi, has once again dismissed rumours of his death, barely five months after a similar false report went viral.
The 83-year-old legend, who is currently in London, shared a video on Instagram on Sunday alongside his sons, singing “I have a God who never fails” before addressing the fresh round of speculation.

In the clip, Obey expressed disappointment at the recurring rumours but reassured fans that he is alive and well.

“People of God, ladies and gentlemen, the enemies have come again. I left Lagos this morning to London, and I arrived London a few hours ago. On arrival, I saw the video that announced again that my ‘enemy’ was dead, that my enemy had a stroke, and all the lies they are speaking,” he said.

“They even carried coffins and showed several photographs. Everything they have said is nothing but lies. It is the intention of the enemy and I know that would never ever come to pass. My God is indeed in control. I don’t have stroke. I came to London to look after myself.”

This is not the first time the juju legend has had to debunk such reports. In April, he released a video describing similar claims as fake news, breaking into Yoruba, English and Pidgin songs to declare: “It is a lie. I am alive.” His aide, Tope Olukole, also confirmed at the time that Obey was healthy and had even attended a family event.

Back in July 2020, Obey also dismissed another round of death rumours, stressing that he was “hale and hearty.”

Born on April 3, 1942, in Idogo, Ogun State, Ebenezer Obey is celebrated as one of the pioneers of juju music. He shot to fame in the 1960s with The International Brothers and later The Inter-Reformers Band before shifting his focus to gospel ministry in the 1990s.
