Wildfire Devastates 4,000 Hectares in Southern France, Injures Two

A massive wildfire tore through 4,000 hectares of land in southern France on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, destroying homes and leaving two individuals injured—one critically. The blaze erupted in the Corbières hills within the Aude region, close to the Mediterranean and near the Spanish border.

Evacuations were carried out in some campgrounds and a village, while several roads were shut down as a result of the rapidly spreading flames. Lucie Roesch, secretary general of the Aude prefecture, explained that strong winds and extremely dry conditions in the area were fueling the fire’s fast progression.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters, assisted by 14 aircraft, have been deployed to contain the fire. Roesch warned that the efforts to control the situation could extend through the night. The Aude department has witnessed a growing number of wildfires in recent years due to decreasing rainfall and the removal of vineyards that once acted as natural firebreaks.
