UNIZIK Law Fresher Dies After Hostel Mistress Refused to Provide a Spare Key For Her to Get Her Diabetes Medication

Tragedy has struck the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, as a 100-level Law student, Miss Ajana Isabella, lost her life due to neglect and lack of empathy by her hostel officials.

Isabella, who is diabetic, reportedly died after she couldn’t access her insulin medication, which was locked inside her hostel room at Elmada Hostel.

According to reports shared by her colleagues, Isabella and her roommates lost their room key and went to request a spare from the hostel authorities.

However, the hostel management allegedly insisted they pay ₦120,000 for the spare key (that is ₦40,000 per person, given that there were three of them) before the room could be opened.

Despite pleas and explanations that Isabella urgently needed her medication, the staff, particularly the hostel mistress identified as Madam Bright, allegedly refused to offer any help without payment.

deteriorated over the weekend. She collapsed on Sunday, July 6, and was rushed to a hospital, where her condition was declared critical. Despite all efforts, she was pronounced dead on Wednesday, July 9.

Her death has sparked outrage across campus and online, with students and sympathizers demanding justice using the hashtag #Justice4Ajana.

“This is not just negligence—this is cruelty,” said Chiamaka Okafor, a fellow student, on Facebook. “Policies should not come before human life. Isabella didn’t have to die.”
