Ex-Governor resigns From APC, Declares Nigeria ‘Destroyed Beyond Repair’
Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that Nigeria is “completely destroyed” and in urgent need of a total national overhaul.
Speaking at the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) interim leadership on Wednesday in Abuja, Amaechi accused both the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of sabotaging democracy and destroying the foundations of governance.
“Things have gone so bad that Nigerians can’t even afford to eat,” Amaechi said. “There’s no money, inflation is at its peak, and people are suffering in silence.”
He said he resigned from the ruling party on Tuesday night and expressed surprise that he was not expelled earlier, having previously warned the APC not to invite him to any meetings.
“You can’t be in a club where majority of people are stealing and you don’t say anything,” Amaechi stated. “I left APC last night. I never attended one meeting.”
When asked why he isn’t supporting the Tinubu administration, Amaechi said the issue was not about changing the government but rescuing Nigeria.
“Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t buy food. Inflation is choking families. The federal government is busy trying to hijack elections, and INEC is helping them,” he alleged.
Amaechi called for a citizen-led movement instead of mere party politics. “It must be a movement that brings in Nigerians to take over government on their own — not us,” he said.
Asked if he ever believed in President Tinubu’s leadership, he responded bluntly: “I have never believed that Tinubu is material to govern the country. Now, people are even asking for Buhari to come back because things were better then.”
Amaechi lamented the exchange rate, saying the dollar now exchanges for ₦1,580, compared to ₦460 under Buhari, a rise he described as “more than 100%.”
He also dismissed claims that current economic policies are deliberate. “Any government that doesn’t consider its people is not running a policy,” he said. “President Tinubu himself said he’s not here to make Nigerians happy.”
When asked if his ambition was too much, Amaechi replied: “I have the right to be ambitious. I am not overambitious.”
The former minister’s resignation comes amid growing coalition activity involving key political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
