Council Chairman Removed  For Misconduct, Financial Irregularities

The decision, which took effect immediately from 30 June 2025, was communicated through an official letter signed by eleven council members and the clerk of the house.

 

The Chairman of the Gurara Local Government Council in Niger State, Abdul-Alim Abubakar, has been removed from office following a resolution passed by the Legislative Council citing gross misconduct and financial irregularities.

The decision, which took effect immediately from 30 June 2025, was communicated through an official letter signed by eleven council members and the clerk of the house.

SaharaReporters learnt that the lawmakers invoked Section 31 (2)(A) of the Local Government Law (2001) of Niger State as the legal basis for the removal.

In the letter addressed to the embattled chairman, the council stated: “Notice of legislative council resolution for your removal from office as the executive chairman of gurara local government council of niger state pursuant to section 31 (2)(a) of the local government law (2001) of niger state.”

It further explained: “As the Legislative council of Gurara Local Government Council at a meeting held on the 30 of june 2025 and in the exercise of the power vested in us and contain in section 31/2)(all of the Local Government law (2001) of Niger State passed a resolution removing you from office as the Executive Chairman of Gurara Local Government Council for gross misconduct, effective immediately from the service of this letter The grounds on which your removal is based are.”

The council accused Mr Abubakar of failing to convene mandatory finance and general purpose committee meetings since November 2024, as well as neglecting to respond to repeated requests for detailed financial reports, including the overhead cost information for several months.

Among other allegations, the lawmakers said: “Your actions have brought the Local Government Council into disrepute and undermined Its ability to function effectively and in the circumstance, you are required and directed to hand over all council properties, documents and records to the leader of the house of Gurara Local Government Council with effect from the service of this letter.”

The resolution, which was endorsed by more than a two-thirds majority, also noted concerns over a lack of accountability regarding Hajj slots and local revenue generation.

The council maintained that the move was necessary to restore transparency and confidence in the local government’s administration.
