This response follows reports that the UK government is preparing to tighten immigration rules for nationals with high rates of visa overstays and asylum claims.
According to The Times, the UK Home Office has flagged these three countries for having some of the highest instances of individuals overstaying their visas and subsequently seeking asylum.
As part of a broader effort to overhaul its immigration policy, the UK may introduce stricter requirements for applicants from these countries, particularly for work and study visas.
“Our upcoming Immigration White Paper will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system,” a Home Office spokesperson stated.
“To tackle abuse by foreign nationals who arrive on work and study visas and go on to claim asylum, we are building intelligence on the profile of these individuals to identify them earlier and faster.”
The spokesperson added that the UK visa system is under continuous review and will be updated to prevent abuse while allowing legitimate travel and migration. The spokesperson added that the proposed policy changes are expected to be officially detailed in the UK Immigration White Paper set for release later this month.
In response to growing speculation and media reports, the British High Commission in Nigeria clarified that the UK remains open to legal migration and values its enduring relationship with Nigeria.Travel guides
The UK government maintains that legal routes will remain open, but warns that new measures will be implemented to reduce visa abuse and protect the integrity of its immigration system, according to a statement obtained by TheCable.
“We keep our immigration system under constant review to allow legal migration and legitimate travel, while deterring those who may seek to abuse it,” a spokesperson for the High Commission said.
“Our UK and Nigeria people-to-people links are strong and enduring, and we continue to work closely with the Government of Nigeria to tackle irregular migration.”
