House of ssembly Proposes Six-Month Jail Term, ₦250,000 Fine For Public Skating

Speaking on the bill, Adewale Egbedun, Speaker of the House and chairman of the committee, emphasised the need to confine roller skating to indoor spaces.

The Osun State House of Assembly has introduced a bill proposing strict penalties for individuals caught skating on public roads or sidewalks, including up to six months in prison or a fine of N250,000.

The bill, titled ‘Osun State Skating Restriction Bill 2025’, was debated during a committee of the whole session at the assembly’s plenary on Tuesday.

Speaking on the bill, Adewale Egbedun, Speaker of the House and chairman of the committee, emphasised the need to confine roller skating to indoor spaces.

“Anybody or persons who skates or use roller skates on public road or sidewalks shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not less than six months or alternative sentencing of payment of sum not less than N250,000 or both,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Egbedun as saying.

Egbedun explained that the proposed law would empower citizens to apprehend individuals skating in public and hand them over to the police.

The bill also seeks to grant both magistrates’ and high courts in the state the authority to adjudicate such offences.
