The family of Nigerian businesswoman Bebe Jewelry, real name Blessing Orji, is reportedly considering how to bring her remains back from China after her death during a business trip.
A claim circulating online puts the cost of repatriation at about ₦40 million, while cremation in China and returning her ashes has reportedly been suggested as an alternative.
The family of Nigerian businesswoman Blessing Orji, popularly known as Bebe Jewelry, is reportedly facing a ₦40 million bill to repatriate her remains from China to Nigeria for burial.
Blessing Orji reportedly died in China while on a business trip. CCTV footage circulating online showed the businesswoman collapsing inside a commercial store, sparking widespread reactions from Nigerians.
According to the latest claim circulating online, the family was informed that transporting her remains back to Nigeria could cost about ₦40 million. An alternative reportedly offered to the family is to cremate her remains in China and return the ashes to Nigeria for burial.
The reported cost has generated questions from Nigerians, with some wondering why repatriating a body internationally could cost significantly more than the price of a passenger flight.
However, the two processes are not equivalent. Repatriating human remains typically involves embalming, preparation of the body, specialised coffins, documentation and permits, international cargo handling and other logistics, meaning the cost is not simply the price of a passenger ticket.
Some Nigerians have also suggested that the family consider cremation in China and transportation of the ashes as a less expensive alternative.
