Wike’s impunity, arrogance behind party’s deepening strife— Bala Mohammed
Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, has blamed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the deepening crisis in the PDP. Mohammed alleges that Wike’s unchecked impunity and arrogance are driving the party’s instability, threatening its stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The crisis in the PDP escalated after Wike and several other high-ranking officials were expelled from the party over alleged anti-party activities. The expulsion was ratified at the party’s national convention in Ibadan, where Kabiru Tanimu Turaki was elected as the new National Chairman.
Mohammed claims Wike has vowed to ensure the PDP does not form the next government in 2027, accusing him of working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy the opposition party. The Bauchi governor described Wike’s actions as “immoral” and warned that his behavior was not helping the current administration.
The situation turned violent on Tuesday when Wike’s faction and supporters of Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde clashed at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds, and several party members were injured.
The PDP crisis has sparked concerns about the party’s future and its ability to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 elections. Governors Seyi Makinde and Dauda Lawal, among others, have been expelled by Wike’s faction, further deepening the party’s divisions.
The party’s leadership is urging members to remain calm and work towards unity, but the ongoing infighting has raised questions about the PDP’s ability to present a united front against the APC.
