A political aide loyal to former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, lere olayinka has taken a swipe at Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over claims surrounding his early wealth, particularly a reported $1 million contract allegedly secured at the age of 29 in 1997.
According to the aide, Makinde has often been portrayed as a self-made technocrat who struck gold early in life, allegedly making $1 million profit from a single contract before turning 30. However, the aide questioned the credibility of this narrative, pointing to Makinde’s living conditions years after the supposed financial breakthrough.
“Where Did the $1m Go?”
The Wike ally claimed that as of 2014 — 14 years after the alleged $1 million profit — Makinde was still living in a modest two-room low-cost apartment in Ikolaba, Ibadan.
The building, described as a six-apartment block, reportedly had Makinde owning and occupying just one unit.
“This was not a mansion, not even a duplex. It was a two-room low-cost apartment,” the aide mocked, adding laughing emojis to drive home the sarcasm.
He further noted that residents familiar with Chief Wole Oyelese’s residence would easily recognize the area, emphasizing that this was where the man who supposedly made $1 million in 1997 lived until he began building his present house in 2016.
Sarcasm and Political Jabs
The aide did not hold back, derisively referring to the governor as “Gomina Lamba General”, suggesting that Makinde’s supporters exaggerate or embellish his personal success story for political branding.
According to him, the contradiction between Makinde’s claimed early wealth and his later lifestyle raises serious questions about the authenticity of the narrative being sold to the public.
Politics of Image vs Reality
This attack comes amid ongoing political rivalries within the PDP, where figures aligned with Wike have repeatedly accused other party leaders of manufacturing personal histories to gain political advantage.
While Makinde has not officially responded to the remarks, the comments have stirred debate online, with supporters and critics trading arguments over whether financial modesty reflects humility or undermines claims of early business success.
As the political temperature rises ahead of future contests, personal histories and past claims are once again becoming weapons in Nigeria’s ever-heated political battlefield.
